Chiru – Seema tour concludes

The six-day Praja Ankita Yatra of the Praja Rajyam (PR) president, Chiranjeevi, concluded in Rayalaseema at Railwaykodur in Kadapa district on Friday. With this, Chiranjeevi completed his first phase of tour in the state. The PR is likely to gauge its strength as the yatra has finished going around Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema regions. As several people attended the yatra in Rayalaseema, the Congress and the Telugu Desam (TD) leaders feel that they should not underestimate the PR. The PR activists are confident as Chiranjeevi’s tour of 16 Assembly constituencies and four Lok Sabha constituencies in Rayalaseema was well received. Earlier, all the parties felt that the PR was strong only in north coastal Andhra. Chiranjeevi depended on his movie glamour during his tour in Rayalaseema. In almost all his meetings, the PR chief mentioned about his movie Indra which was produced in the backdrop of Rayalaseema factions. When compared to his tour in north coastal Andhra and Telangana regions, Chiranjeevi was less critical of the government in Rayalaseema. He mentioned about corruption and factionism in the region. However, Chiranjeevi’s speeches failed to enthuse the people. Barring his fans, others said his speeches were lacklustre. Out of 16 Assembly constituencies Chiranjeevi toured in Kadapa and Anantapur districts, Congress MLAs represent 13 constituencies and the TD MLAs represent the remaining three constituencies. The PR chief mainly targeted the Congress in his speeches. During his three-day in Anantapur district, there was good response for Chiranjeevi’s roadshows in the first two days and the response in the last day was lukewarm. In Chiranjeevi’s three-day tour in the Kadapa district, the Congress and the PR activists clashed in Pulivendula, the constituency of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, on the first day. His meeting in Pulivendula became a success. People thronged his meetings on the second and final day of his tour in the Kadapa district. The response to Chiranjeevi’s roadshows in Penukonda, Hindupur and Dharmavaram constituencies, represented by the TD MLAs, in the Anantapur district was good. However, the response to his tour in Singanamala, Gooty and Tadipatri constituencies, represented by the Congress MLAs, in the Anantapur district was lukewarm. In Kadapa district, the response to Chiranjeevi’s tour in Proddutur, Mydukur, Kadapa and Rajampet constituencies was good. Except Badvel and Rayachoti, Chiranjeevi toured all constituencies in the district. -D C

Chiru tour turns ‘reel’ yatra

Chiranjeevi’s Praja Ankita Yatra has turned into a good opportunity for people in the Rayalaseema region to shake hands with him and and get his autograph. Instead of venting their woes, people are busy asking the actor-turned politician to enact scenes from his blockbuster films like Indra, Tagore and Shankar Dada MBBS rather their telling him of their problem.

This has come as a major blow to the Praja Rajyam leadership which wanted to use the yatra to woo voters. Political observers say people still see Chiranjeevi as an actor rather than as a politician.
Even though the PR chief is getting a good response for his road shows, party leaders are wondering if it will turn into votes.

“Chiranjeevi is drawing huge crowds, during his shows. Youngsters are struggling to get his autograph. Though some people are trying to tell him of their problems, these are very rare,” said a PR leader who is accompanying the actor. It was evident on Thursday when Chiranjeevi addressed road shows in Kadapa district. All through the day, he just received one memorandum from farmers.

The PR chief also seems to have realised that there is no other option for him but to re-enact scenes from his films to attract people. At one point on Wednesday, Chiranjeevi twirled his moustache and slapped his thigh while re-enacting a scene from Indra during a road show in Pulivendula, the home constituency of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.

A PR leader, Mr Seshanarayan, said, “He knows the only way to attract youngsters is through dialogues.” When asked about this, both the agriculture minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy and the Telugu Desam politburo member, Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy, said the people were thronging the roadshows only to see the actor.

Chiru may make his stand clear on Telangana soon

Sircilla (AP) (PTI): Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi on Thursday virtually endorsed the demand for separate Telangana state, though he stopped short of announcing his party’s stand on the issue. Kicking off the second leg of his mass-contact programme from this  handloom hub in the Telangana heartland, the Praja Rajyam party founder said he understood the sentiments of the people and their desire. “I don’t have any personal agenda. People’s agenda is my agenda. I can understand the heartbeat of the people of Telangana. I honour the self-respect of the people of the region,” he said, addressing a road show here. Amid cheers from the large gathering, the megastar said he would spell out his party’s stand on the statehood issue before completion of his present leg of tour. “I will not leave Telangana without spelling out my stand on the most-awaited issue,” Chiranjeevi said. The second round of his tour would cover Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts over the next eight days in Telangana region. Without naming any one, he hit out at political parties for exploiting the innocence of Telangana people for their advantage. Chiranjeevi’s tour in Telangana is keenly watched in political circles as his stand on the statehood demand is expected to impact the outcome of the next year’s assembly elections.Since Telangana has emerged as a key issue ahead of polls, the megastar’s position will influence the nature of alliances in the region.
