The Praja Rajyam president, Chiranjeevi, explained that he twirled his moustache and patted his thighs only to make oppressed people happy. Chiranjeevi had enacted a scene from his movie Indra during his Praja Ankita Yatra at Pulivendula, the home constituency of the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy. He said this while addressing advocates during the party’s legal cell convention at Image Gardens in Hyderbad. Interestingly, even the advocates asked him to enact the scene. Then the Praja Rajyam chief refused to oblige. “I did that on a request from locals at Pulivendula to make them happy. The downtrodden have been seeking social justice for a long time. Twirling the moustache shows courage. They pressurised me to enact the scene to give vent to their feelings. I did it to instil confidence among them,” he said. The PR chief called upon the advocates to lend their services to bring justice to the poor. Chiranjeevi pacified leaders who complained that the government was registering false cases against them in order to scare them. “You need not worry. From now on our advocates will take care of you,” Chiranjeevi said. -D C

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy described Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi as a “political novice” who lacked a clear understanding of various issues. Addressing the maiden meeting of the newly appointed Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee office-bearers here at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, Dr. Reddy targeted the PR chief saying that he was ignorant of the ground realities and preferred to read a prepared text without doing an in-depth study of the issues. Dr. Reddy called upon the office bearers and other leaders to work in close coordination so that the party retained power without any difficulty. He exuded confidence that the Congress would win 235 seats. “No other political party can dream of coming to close to us,” he reportedly told the office-bearers. He also reportedly criticised the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the Left parties for their desperation to forge alliances with other parties. “It is unfortunate that these parties have given a go-by to their ideologies. They only want to defeat the Congress and Rajasekhara Reddy,” he reportedly remarked. APCC president D. Srinivas told reporters that party functionaries were told to publicise the government’s developmental and welfare programmes. “Rely on word of mouth campaign,” he said and added that though advertisements in television and newspapers were okay, they had a limited reach. Rosaiah’s advice Finance Minister and APCC Campaign Committee chairman K. Rosaiah urged the leaders to highlight programmes such as Arogyasri, which was being emulated by other States. Later, Mr. Srinivas had separate interaction with the office-bearers on allotment of organisational work. He is understood to have discussed issues such as inclusion of office-bearers in the campaign and selection committees. – The Hindu

A secretly recorded video of megastar Chiran-jeevi giving directions to his party district coordinators to spy on leaders who have come in from other parties has embarrassed the Praja Rajyam to no end. The video, which has been posted in popular website YouTube, was recorded with a spy camera by a leader who took part in the core committee meeting. It was also circulated to a section of the press. In the video, Chiranjeevi can be seen saying that many whom he considered close aides were passing on information to rivals. “These days we can’t believe anybody however big they may be,” he says in the video grab. “After all we are all human beings and have so many desires. So I want you to spy on the movements of politicians in our party.” The Praja Rajyam is red-faced that a meeting which was held to chalk out plans to snoop on leaders was itself spied upon. More so, since it has happened just two days after the party accused the government of tapping the cell phones of its leaders. The issue came out just days after this paper reported that party observers had been asked to spy on new entrants. Chiranjeevi’s directive has also given credence to criticism that Praja Rajyam istreating leaders who came in from the Congress and the Telugu Desam with derision and suspicion.
The core committee meeting was held in the context of a ‘classified file’ going missing from the Praja Rajyam headquarters despite it being under constant surveillance by CCTV cameras. The party spokesperson, Mr P. Mitra, however defended the plans to spy on the activities of the party leaders. “There is nothing wrong in it,” he said. “We are keeping tabs on the politicians who came in from other parties only to keep the party corruption free.” This newspaper had reported the other day that the party had appointed district coordinators to spy on the movements of leaders. The Praja Rajyam top brass is also afraid that politicians from other parties may now think twice before crossing over. Meanwhile, the second phase of Chiranjeevi’s Praja Ankita Yatra will begin from Siricilla in Karimnagar district on Thursday. -DC

Hyderabad: An income tax (I-T) official in his private capacity has dragged PCC president D Srinivas and Prajarajyam chief Chiranjeevi to court for ‘misusing’ public places by organising meetings in Tirupati. He claimed that both were punishable under various sections of the IPC for polluting the environment.
Speaking to media here, deputy commissioner of I-T (exemptions) V Saiprasad Sastry said he has filed petitions against the two leaders in the third additional district munsif magistrate court, stating that the two leaders were liable for up to five-year jail under the Environment Protection Act 1986 for polluting public places. Sastry said the court admitted the petition and posted it to December 17 for hearing. According to Sastry, Chiranjeevi, who launched his PRP at a massive public meeting at Avilala Cheruvu in Tirupati on Aug 26, and D Srinivas, who organised a meeting at the forest avenue plantation area adjoining Tirupati airport, which was attended by AICC president Sonia Gandhi on Sept 11, violated the AP Prevention of Disfigurement of Open Places and Prohibition of Objectionable Posters and Advertisement Act 1997, which is punishable by imprisonment up to 3 months.
He said more than five tonnes of plastic material littered the Avilala tank and one tonne of plastic garbage was strewn around the open lake at the Congress meeting venue. Both the leaders were punishable under the sections 268 and 425 and the Environment Protection Act 1986. The political parties had failed to clean the grounds after the meetings, he said.
The two parties violated the advertisement act by pasting the posters on the wall of public premises.
Further, the fact that the publisher’s name was not mentioned on the posters under AP Press and Registration of Books Rules 1960 was an offence punishable with imprisonment up to 6 months. It was all his effort to expose how the political parties were violating the laws and the acts, he added.
