HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam came into being promising a ‘change’. Whatever might have happened in other places, the party seems to have kept its word at least with regard to selection of candidate for the Secunderabad Parliamentary constituency.
True, Dasoju Sravan Kumar fulfils the social justice criteria yet he also comes with impressive credentials. He is not only a doctorate but has chucked away a lucrative corporate job to plunge into politics.
“Despite my modest family background I had this burning desire to do social service. My party has unleashed a potential revolution in giving tickets to people like me,” says bespectacled Mr. Kumar.
He strongly feels that the electorate is ready to accept young, articulate and educated representatives like him.
While electoral politics are new to him, he was pretty active as a student leader in the Osmania University’s College of Arts & Social Sciences in the late 80s. “OU is a temple not only for me but scores of students hailing from remote places in Telangana.”
After his MBA, he worked in the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) as a project associate and as a faculty member of Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) on completing his doctorate in Human Relations and Organisational Psychology.
“Both organisations sharpened my professional skills and develop a holistic approach as I interacted with both corporate heads and those active in social sector.” His corporate stint was with Sierra Atlantic and Satyam where he could put his “theories into practice”.
Course of events
Interaction with Pawan Kalyan through a common friend to develop a movie subject on student politics steered the course of his life into a new pasture. Incidentally, he produced a movie ‘Kubusum’ and also enacted the role of a naxalite leader.
“I was scared initially when Pawan Kalyan and Chiranjeevi invited me to join PR,” he recalls.
Originally involved in organisational set up, he was “mentally prepared” to contest when the offer came.
Improving civic amenities in slums (“one-third people live in them”) and traffic management (“public transport like metro is necessary”) are his chief campaign issues.
“I have a strong intuitive feeling that I will win because one of my opponents is too old and ought to retire while the other has not opened his mouth even once in the Parliament. I request people to give me one opportunity,” he appeals.

Nagababu will mostly be contesting for polls from the Vizianagaram constituency since this is the strong area for minister Bothsa Satyanarayana of Congress who has been ridiculing Chiru at every given chance. PRP is keen on getting back at him and who better than megabrother himself. However, a final confirmation is still awaited on this news.

The Telugu film industry organised a march, denouncing the 26/11 Mumbai terror strike and expressing solidarity with the armed forces which successfully eliminated the terrorists and saved many innocent lives, on Sunday.
Thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao, veteran actress Jamuna, stars Murali Mohan, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Rajendra Prasad, Rajasekhar, Jeevita, Jagapathi Babu, Srikanth, Roja, Ravi Teja, Raja, Ramcharan Tej, director K Raghavendra Rao and a host of others took part in the march from Ravindra Bharati auditorium to the state assembly premises, where tribute was paid to Mahatma Gandhi.
The industry bigwigs also paid tributes to the security officers who lost their lives in the gun battle with the terrorists. They also paid homage to the civilians killed in the 60-hour attack.
Appealing to the people to stand united, they said, “We are a strong nation and unity in diversity is our strength. We shall not be cowed down by such heinous attacks.”
“India is a country of peace and Indians are known across the world as peace-lovers. Incidents like the Mumbai terror attacks are totally unfortunate. But, we have the resolve to face them and march ahead on the path of peace,” Nageswara Rao said.
Balakrishna and Rajendra Prasad echoed Nageswara Raos feelings and said Indians should set aside their differences like religion, region, caste and creed and stand united in the times of crisis.
The notable factor in the Tollywood rally was the coming together of the film personalities setting aside their political differences.
While Nandamuri Balakrishna, Roja, Murali Mohan, Raghavendra Rao and Paruchuri Gopalakrishna are Telugu Desam Party members, Rajasekhar and Jeevita are sailing with Congress. Ramcharan Tej is the son of Mega Star and Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi while some other stars are Chiranjeevi;s close associates.
But politics was not in play as Tollywood stood as one and organised the event under the aegis of AP Film Chamber of Commerce.
The Movie Artists Association, Telugu Film Producers Council, Telugu Film Directors Association, AP Film Industry Employees Federation and other affiliate bodies took part too
